Whether your child is here for an emergency department visit, tests, treatments, or surgery, expect an overall caring experience for everyone—from the moment you walk through our doors.
When your child has a serious health issue, we know that you deserve focused attention and the latest in treatments and support.
Innovation and high-level quality care are critical pillars for Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. With 350+ pediatric specialists and sub-specialists, and 12 years of U.S. News & World Report national rankings, our hospital draws patients from all over the world.
We promise to support you with a knowledgeable and compassionate staff who speak “with” you, not “at” you. Our doctors and nurses will always provide your family with options when possible and explain the differences between each.
There will be calls to make. Documents you will need to bring with you. Bags to pack. It can feel like a lot of to-dos just to get ready. So, please, take a quick look through our check-in process and review our packing checklist ahead of time. These are helpful tools to help prepare you and keep you focused.
If you’re still unsure whether you should bring a specific item, please reach out to the Child and Family Life team and ask.
The discomfort you might have about bringing your child into a hospital for a stay is not lost on us; it drives us to ensure we’re providing a healing environment for the whole family. This means removing financial concerns with parking. Giving your child access to interactive TVs, the internet, even gaming stations, to relieve stress and remain social. And building larger community type areas, like our Peter & Pat Cook Family Resource Library, where children and families can be together, participate in games, music, crafts and art.
We know this journey is far from easy. Our dedicated team cares for children day in and day out, and many of us are devoted parents ourselves, so we understand when you get worried about treatments or procedures or feel stressed about your child not feeling well. You can lean on us for guidance and for comfort.
We can help with wheelchair assistance, language translation services, hearing support, even planning for a visiting pet. We’ll show you how to capture a few quiet moments in our chapel or provide our recommendation for a good cup of coffee. However we can help, we're here with open hearts and open arms to support you every step of the way.
Our question guide will help you ask the right questions to get the answers you need for your child's care.
You can expect us to focus on speed as well as the highest quality care. We know that efficiency leads to better outcomes, and that your home environment is the best place to heal.
Did we help with schoolwork? Help ease some anxiety? Suggest a good movie? Our Child and Family Life team wants to ensure your stay with our hospital was cared for in all ways. Let us know.
And don’t forget, we’re still here for you after you go. Feel free to call Child and Family Life team to ask any questions—even if you simply left something behind.
