Neonatal Transport Team

Of the 1,400 newborns cared for in our Level IV neonatal intensive care unit every year, about 350 are transferred from other hospitals. We serve all of West and Northern Michigan, and we include the Upper Peninsula in our referral area.

It takes extra special care to transport a newborn who has intensive care needs. Our ambulance was specially designed and built for transporting sick babies. Occasionally we use a helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft if needed due to distance or critical nature of the infant. The transport team consists of a neonatal nurse practitioner, specially trained transport nurse and respiratory therapist. One of our neonatal physicians is available at all times to provide direction by phone.
