Who We Are

The Executive Patient and Family Advisory Council, established in 2006 as the original patient and family advisory council, oversees all other councils. The executive council aligns the various councils, ensuring similar structure and goals, while helping newly established councils develop a strong base.

Council Accomplishments: 

  • Helped shape MyHealth, the online patient portal tool that allows patients to gain access to their Spectrum Health medical records
  • Provided guidance on multidisciplinary team rounding and established a set time so that families know when to be present
  • To prepare for the baby boomer population, the council focused on home health care and helped the Chronic Disease Pilot understand the importance of appointments that focus on quality over quantity
  • Helped define the ideal ‘Spectrum Health experience’
  • Collaborated with leadership on how to engage the patient and family members with safety conversations
  • Co-presented at the Health Performance Improvement event on safety, calling for the need for transparency and the ability to engage family members in the moment
  • Serve on quality, ethics, medication safety and communications committees to represent patient and family perspective
  • Provided input on the Blodgett Hospital renovation and expansion, with the goal of making a space that is more inviting for families to be involved in caring for their loved ones
  • Collaborated with human resources to implement behavioral-based interviewing education for Spectrum Health leadership candidates
  • Consulted on Spectrum Health advertising campaigns, a centralized phone scheduling system and hand-washing compliance initiatives
  • Offered feedback on Condition Concern, a hotline for patients and families to obtain additional assistance from a health care provider
  • Presented a patient-family-centered care interactive educational session for medical residents at Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Center
  • Presented a learning lab, Great Experiences Through Patient/Family Partnerships, at the 21st Annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care, sponsored by the Institute for Health Care Improvement
