Specialty services

As women, our health journeys can be complex. From adolescence to menopause, our bodies are constantly changing—and so are our health goals, needs and issues.

Our specialty services teams take an integrated approach to supporting the whole you, at even the most complex points in your journey. We take the time to get to know you, your history and what’s important to you. We draw on our collective expertise to create personalized plans that incorporate the latest treatments and targeted therapies. And we communicate with each other and with you along the way, to ensure we’re helping you achieve your goals and feel your best.

Bone health

Bones are the framework of our bodies. They’re also living tissue that changes constantly. In women, bone strength and density peaks around age 25-30, and the rate at which we then lose bone density depends on factors like age, exercise, genetics, hormones and nutrition.

Periodic bone density testing helps you know how your bones are doing. Painless, non-invasive and safe, a DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan measures bone mineral content and density. Based on your individualized results, our team will pinpoint your personal level of risk for bone-related problems like fractures and osteoporosis, and provide individualized ways to minimize your risk and build bone health. To assess your risk of fracture, take a fracture risk quiz.

Complex gynecology and minimally invasive surgery

Many women suffer throughout their lifetime with gynecologic conditions that can impact their health and quality of life, leading to pelvic pain, abnormal uterine bleeding, problems conceiving and problems with sexuality. Endometriosis affects an estimated 10% of women, and uterine fibroids approximately 40% of reproductive-age women. Many women with these conditions may end up requiring surgery for optimal treatment.

Our team of specialized gynecologic surgeons offer personalized, comprehensive medical and surgical treatment options. Our surgical team has extensive experience and performs a high volume of complex and advanced minimally invasive procedures. When conservative medical approaches fail, we offer a full range of minimally invasive surgical approaches including robotic, laparoscopic, and vaginal surgery including operative hysteroscopy. These options allow surgeons to perform highly precise gynecologic procedures with small incisions, resulting in less pain, a lower risk of complications and shorter recovery times.

        Nutrition

Proper nutrition is essential for overall health and wellness, and women’s nutrition needs differ from men’s. Women usually need fewer calories to maintain a healthy weight. We also may have specific needs for certain vitamins and minerals—like calcium, magnesium and iron—based on our age, height, weight and activity level.

Whether you’re looking to lose weight, increase energy or avoid foods that drag you down, our registered dietitians will partner with you to develop a personalized nutrition plan, and stay connected to keep you on track.

          Pelvic floor physical therapy

The pelvic floor is the set of muscles, ligaments and connective tissue that is part of our core and helps support our bodies. In women, the pelvic floor does double duty, supporting the body as well as the uterus, bladder and rectum. While pelvic floor dysfunction can affect woman of any age, childbirth, obesity, injury, aging—even genetics—can all weaken or damage our pelvic floor.

Many women experiencing pelvic floor issues assume surgery is their only option; however, physical therapy can often resolve even longstanding issues. Our pelvic floor physical therapists work with you on a total-body approach to health, wellness and strength, and are specially trained in pelvic disorders and offer a wide array of treatment options, including manual therapy techniques, stretching and strengthening exercises, support and movement strategies, and modalities like biofeedback training. Working one-on-one with you in a private setting, they utilize the latest technology and procedures to restore pelvic control, strength and function.

            Psychotherapy and counseling

Most women have times in their lives when their thoughts or emotions are astray, whether due to difficult relationships, work or family stress, life transitions, or a combination of unique factors. At these times, talking to a licensed psychotherapist can provide the support you need to get back on track.

At the Women’s Health & Wellness Center, our therapists specialize in a woman’s unique perspective and issues. Through individual sessions, our therapists will partner with you to identify and change the thought and behavior patterns that are keeping you from feeling your best.

              Sexual health

Our sexual health depends on so many dimensions—physical, hormonal and emotional—it’s no wonder almost 40% of women at some point experience an issue significant enough to interfere with sexual activity.

While our sex lives necessarily change and evolve over time in response to several factors, we believe no woman should feel she has to settle for a less satisfying sex life due to menopause, a pelvic floor disorder or other issue. Our expert team includes certified sex therapists, who will help assess the causes for sexual issues from a holistic perspective and help get you back to a healthy, happy sex life.

              Urogynecology

A urogynecologist is a surgeon who specializes in caring for women with pelvic floor disorders (urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse), childbirth injury, and complications from gynecologic surgery (fistulas).

Our urogynecologists take a whole-person approach to female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, offering personalized treatment plans that combine a unique blend of technical expertise, comprehensive office evaluation and testing, multiple options for nonsurgical and surgical treatments, and collaboration with other teams including colorectal services and pelvic floor physical therapy. If a conservative approach fails, our expert surgeons offer a variety of individualized surgical options for minimally invasive vaginal and robotic surgical procedures for treatment of urogynecologic conditions including pelvic reconstruction and incontinence. We are widely recognized throughout West Michigan for restoring comfort and improved function for even the most complex conditions.
