Gastric sleeve surgery

Sleeve gastrectomy is a viable stand-alone treatment option for bariatric surgery patients. It was designed as the first of two steps ending with the Roux-en-Y for morbidly obese patients. It was so successful by itself that few patients needed to have the Roux-en-Y. Patients with a BMI of 35 to 40 with a major comorbidity or a BMI of 40 or greater may benefit from this surgery.

Weight loss expectations

On average, gastric sleeve patients can potentially lose 50 to 65 percent of their excess weight.

Disease resolution

The gastric sleeve procedure has several proven benefits, including:

  • Resolving Type 2 diabetes in about 50 percent of patients
  • Resolving high blood pressure in about 40 percent of patients
  • Improving high cholesterol in more than 75 percent of patients
