Injury Prevention Program

About Our Service

The instinct to protect your children is hardwired in you as a parent. Our injury prevention program helps busy families keep safety at the forefront with the goal of eliminating unintentional childhood injury and death.

Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital is the lead agency for Safe Kids Greater Grand Rapids. We educate families, agencies, health care professionals and children on various safety topics. We hope that by jumping on the chance to share tips, warnings, statistics and lifesaving actions, every kid will be a "safe kid."

Our events are held in many communities throughout the year. Check our classes and events listings to find one near you.

Whether you are looking for information to keep your own children safe or if you want to share information with other families, please contact us. We utilize presentations, printed information and safety events to reach our community with injury prevention information.

Features of Injury Prevention Program

  • Helmet and Safety Gear Education

Learn how to properly fit and fasten your child's bike helmet or other safety gear. Bike helmets reduce the risk of brain injury by nearly 90 percent. Get smart for safer kids.

  • Home Safety Education

Kids get hurt at home more often than elsewhere. Our home safety tips can help you when it comes to spotting easily overlooked dangers around the house.

  • Sports Safety Education

Sports have multiple benefits for children, both physically and emotionally, but also have the potential for risk and injury. By knowing how to prepare your child before play and taking care of him or her during, as well as after, an athletic activity, you can keep him or her safe.

  • Water Safety Education

Water safety is often overlooked as a danger by even the most attentive parents. Find out what you're missing and know for sure that your kids are "waterproof" at every age.

  • Car Seat Safety Education

Car seats are tricky. If not installed properly, they may not work in a crash. We hold classes, events and safety checks throughout West Michigan. Families in need may qualify for a discounted car seat.
