Supportive Care Medicine Clinic
The Supportive Care Medicine Clinic provides support to adult cancer patients and their families. A cancer diagnosis causes many life changes. Receiving the right emotional and psychological support can make a positive difference for everyone. This clinic is an integral part of the care provided through the Spectrum Health Cancer Center.
The entire clinic team is passionate about supporting cancer patients. We understand how to help reduce the distress that a cancer diagnosis can cause. We offer a holistic approach by treating the mind, body and spirit of each patient.
The clinic is led by a psychiatrist experienced in how medications used to treat mental health conditions can interact with cancer medications. This allows us to watch for symptoms that may occur as a result, and how to interpret and resolve them if they arise. Common conditions that we diagnose and treat include:
- Adjustment disorders (stress-related)
- Anxiety disorder
- Mood disorders
- Major depression disorder
- Dysthymic disorder
- Bipolar disorder
We work closely with a patient’s oncologist, surgeon, radiation oncologist and infusion therapist, and whenever possible, can help schedule a clinic appointment to coincide with other appointments at the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion.
We also offer evaluation and consultation, ongoing medication management, and psychotherapy such as:
- Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) therapies
- Meaning-centered therapy
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- Interpersonal therapy (IPT)
- Couples counseling
- Other supportive psychotherapies
What to Expect
As a new patient, you will receive a packet of information in the mail prior to your first clinic appointment (if time allows). The packet includes several forms to complete and bring to your appointment.
At your first clinic visit, the psychiatrist and therapist will each meet with you to review the information you provided on the forms. They will perform a comprehensive evaluation. The clinic team will then meet to review your individual situation and provide you with a recommended care plan before you leave.
After your first visit, we will schedule regular appointments for you to meet with your therapist. We can coordinate these times with your other scheduled care appointments at Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion. If your treatment plan includes medications, you will also meet with the psychiatrist on a monthly basis, or as needed.
