Volunteer With Us
The following areas are in need of volunteer support! If you are interested in one or more of the following volunteer roles, the possible schedule openings fit your schedule and you feel you can meet all of the requirements and commitments, please apply. Renucci Hospitality House Host: Do you enjoying meeting new people and making them feel at home? This hotel-like house at the Medical Center is for loved ones whose family member is a patient at Butterworth, Blodgett or Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. Would you enjoy joining the team to greet and chat with those staying there, provide house tours, answer questions, help people locate amenities at the Medical Center and in Grand Rapids and keep the public areas tidy and organized? These volunteers would also help with seasonal decorations and maintaining donated supplies for guests. (Tuesday and Friday from 3:00pm to 7:00pm)
Veterans Support at the Medical Center (Butterworth, Meijer Heart Center) and Blodgett: Are you a compassionate person who has great respect for our veterans? Do you enjoy meeting new people and engaging them in meaningful conversation? Our Veterans Support Services program is looking for volunteers to meet with hospitalized veterans to provide that meaningful conversation and complete a survey with the patient that helps staff ensure that veterans are engaged in community support services that they need or that they could benefit from. (Tuesday through Thursday from 8:00am to 12:00pm, 1:00pm to 5:00pm and 6:00pm to 9:00pm; Saturday from 9:00am to 12:00 pm and 1:00pm to 4pm)
“Take Them There” Wayfinding at Blodgett, Lemmen Holton Cancer Pavilion and the Medical Center (Butterworth, Meijer Heart Center, Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital): Do you like to stay active and help people find their way? Our visitors need help locating their destinations and our amenities like eateries, pharmacies, gifts shops, parking, etc. Could you be that smiling face that notices the need for help and gets someone where they need to go and makes them feel at home? (Monday through Friday; several shifts daily)
Greeter at Heart & Vascular Center in Grand Rapids (Bradford Street): Would you enjoy warmly greeting visitors and assisting them to find where they need to go? This busy large medical building which includes doctors’ offices, medical testing areas and a lab is looking for volunteers to warmly greet those entering and steer them in the right direction! (Monday thru Friday; 7:30am, 10:30am, 1:30pm in 3 hour shifts)
Hospitality Hosts in Blodgett and Butterworth Waiting Rooms: Do you like to mingle and chat with new faces and make people feel at home? Do you like to help people feel comfortable? Our Surgical Waiting Rooms need volunteers to support our visitors by offering them coffee or water, sharing your friendly company, and help them find the eateries, pharmacies, gift shops, or parking. (Blodgett: 9:00am to 12:00pm and 12:00pm to 4:00pm Monday thru Friday; Butterworth: Monday thru Thursday from 8:00am to 12:00pm)
Hospitality Hosts in Pre/Post Operation Area at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital: Can you make others more comfortable and reduce their worries? Can you make families feel at home and comfortable? Volunteers are needed to be hospitable to families whose children are having surgery by offering coffee and a friendly face, activities to children and helping them locate our amenities such as the gift shop, the ice cream shop/pizza café or the pharmacy. (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00am to 1:00pm)
Greeter / Hospitality Hosts in Radiology at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital: Would you enjoy warmly greeting children and their families and helping them begin to register when they arrive? Do you like to make people feel at home and help them with directional guidance, answer parking questions, and find our restaurants, gift shops, etc.? Do you like to be a part of a team and support the staff and keep the waiting area inviting and comfortable? (Tuesday 12:30pm to 4:30pm and Friday from 8:30am to 12:30pm and 12:30pm to 4:30pm)
Resource Support in the Lemmen Holton Cancer Pavilion Library (American Cancer Society partnership): Do you like to meet new people and make them feel welcome and at home? Would you like to assist patients and their families find educational materials and resources that could support them during their cancer journey? Would you like to take a hospitality cart to designated locations to offer comfort and other items with those in treatment? Do you like to help keep a library of items organized and visible? (Monday thru Friday from 10:00am to 2:00pm)
Child Companions / Child Life Team Support at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and On-Site/Off-Site Clinics: Do you enjoy children of all ages? Would you like to provide activities, keep them company and put a smile on their face? Come spend some time with young patients and support the Child Life staff by keeping playrooms tidy and stocked and also assist with special events. (Monday thru Sunday; several shifts daily)
Patient and Family Advisory Councils (PFACs): Would you like to partner with Spectrum Health leaders to improve how care is provided? Would you like to be a part of a team that helps health care professionals continually work to elevate their quality of care? Spectrum Health has 18 separate PFACs with over 170 volunteers and they are looking for new members. Next Steps and Orientation
After we receive your application and reference letters, we will review them to see if any open opportunities align with your interest. We will contact you by phone if we feel there is a match. If we cannot identify a match at this time, we will keep your file open for six months. We will contact you within that time if other openings become available that may interest you.
If we contact you by phone, we will further discuss requirements, your availability and our current openings. The next step is a face-to-face interview. If it is decided to move forward, we must complete a background check. We ask you to meet additional requirements (free of charge and with our assistance) such as two tuberculosis skin tests, seasonal flu shot and possible immunizations if you are not up to date (for patient contact areas).
You will need to complete a written orientation including topics such as Spectrum Health's mission/vision/values, personal and building safety, infection control, confidentiality laws, etc. You will have to sign and agree to a commitment statement and Spectrum Health's Code of Excellence.
Following completion of these steps, our team will refer you to a location for a weekly shift on a specific day and time. You will receive parking instructions, and a volunteer badge and a uniform, if applicable. The volunteer leader in your location will contact you to set up orientation and welcome you to your new volunteer role.
