Cardiac Device Care

If your care plan includes a cardiac device, trust the experts at Spectrum Health for implantation and long-term monitoring that helps you live well.

What’s a Cardiac Device?

Cardiac implantable devices help detect, monitor or control irregular heartbeats. Most of these devices go under the skin in your chest. Types of cardiac devices we place and monitor include:

  • Pacemaker – Restores your heart’s rhythm if your heart beats too slowly or irregularly
  • Implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) – Restores heart rhythm if your heart beats too quickly or irregularly
  • Implanted cardiac monitor (ICM) – Records your heart’s electrical activity for up to four years to help diagnose arrhythmia

Leadless Pacemakers

If you need a pacemaker, ask your doctor if you’re a candidate for a leadless pacemaker.

Leads are the wires that deliver energy from a traditional pacemaker to your heart. Leadless pacemakers are 90% smaller than traditional pacemakers and can be placed directly in your heart—so you don’t need leads.

If your doctor can treat your condition with a leadless pacemaker, you’ll benefit from:

  • No surgical scar or bump under your skin
  • Lower risk of infection
  • No risk of lead-related complications
  • Quicker return to activities that use your upper body, such as swimming and golf

Lead Extraction

Most pacemakers and ICDs use special wires called leads to deliver energy to your heart. If your leads need to be replaced or removed, turn to Spectrum Health. Our team uses minimally invasive techniques and sophisticated tools, like precise lasers, to perform dozens of lead extractions each year.
