Heart and lung surgery procedures

Spectrum Health has the most experienced cardiothoracic surgery team in the state of Michigan. We are a quaternary program, which includes all the care available at a community program in addition to specific advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services. Our program includes heart and lung transplantation, artificial heart pumps, robotic heart and lung surgery, catheter-based valve replacement, and cardiothoracic critical care.

We offer the most comprehensive surgery and care for a wide range of complex cardiac conditions. As a referral center, we treat patients from the entire state who require complex initial operations, reoperations, and complex reconstructions. Our multidisciplinary team focuses on state-of the-art care to provide the best outcomes for our patients.

We perform the highest volume of adult open-heart surgeries and lung cancer surgeries in the state of Michigan. This enormous experience translates into better health outcomes for our patients! Our goal is to provide every aspect of heart and lung surgery in West Michigan so that patients don’t need to travel elsewhere for their care.

We have an exceptional reputation for cardiac and thoracic surgery and for over 50 years our surgical team has dedicated their lives to bringing the highest quality of care to our Michigan Communities

How we care for our most complex patients

The Heart Team is a multidisciplinary forum for collaborative discussion of patients with complex, cardiac disease. We’ve reviewed over 2000 of these cases since 2015. This conference includes specialists from cardiothoracic surgery, interventional cardiology, advanced heart failure, advanced imaging, clinical cardiology, structural heart, cardiac anesthesia, and intensivists. Our collaboration allows us to design an individualized treatment plan that is most likely to be successful.

Our team’s goals:

  • Allow thorough discussion of a patient’s condition (utilizing input from subspecialists in cardiovascular care) to achieve a consensus opinion whenever possible.
  • To present physicians with a comprehensive review of available options to assist them with choosing the best treatment for their patient.
  • To reassure patients by providing them with understandable treatment options that were crafted by the experts.
