About Our Service
Our Flow Cytometry Laboratory is the only hospital-based clinical flow cytometry laboratory in West Michigan, and serves hospitals and clinics across the U.S. and Canada. Testing is performed annually on more than 6,200 specimens, including peripheral blood, bone marrow, tissue samples and body fluids. The laboratory utilizes four-color and six-color analysis on state-of-the-art flow cytometers with cell sorting capability.
Flow Cytometry performs a variety of testing, including diagnostic testing for leukemia and lymphoma as well as immune competency testing such as CD4 and CD8 Helper Suppressor Testing. We are able to provide physicians with preliminary results for new leukemia within approximately three hours which allows the physician to begin more targeted treatment based upon the specific type of leukemia. In addition, preliminary cytogenetic testing results generally within 24 hours of receipt provides physicians with a clear understanding of the specific leukemia or lymphoma present.
We perform the clinical diagnostic testing for the groundbreaking international Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation COMMPASS research study, and perform testing for the Neuroblastoma and Medulloblastoma Translational Research Consortium, a group of 19 universities and children’s hospitals headquartered here at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital offering a nationwide network of childhood cancer clinical trials.
The Advanced Technology Laboratories are located in the Spectrum Health Hospitals Cancer Center at Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion.
