About our Expressive Arts program

Art can be an important part of the rehabilitation process as a powerful healing tool. Our Expressive Arts program promotes your ability to think creatively, use judgment and make decisions. It utilizes concentration, problem solving, visual perception and fine motor skills. By making choices, initiating projects and creatively planning pieces of art from beginning to end, you may experience greater independence and motivation.

The Expressive Arts program also provides a way to relieve anxiety—aiding in your physical, mental and emotional recovery. Spectrum Health offers a variety of creative opportunities to express one’s individuality, imagination and emotions. Artwork is often on display and available for sale to the public at two dedicated galleries in the Rehab and Nursing facilities at Fuller Avenue and Kalamazoo Avenue. Proceeds from art sales support this program.

The program is directed by a professional artist and is offered to patients recovering from injury, surgery and cancer. Expressive Arts is offered at select facilities:

  • Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion
  • Inpatient Rehabilitation at the Rehab and Nursing Center on Fuller Avenue
  • Inpatient Rehabilitation at our long-term Neuro Residential Care program on Kalamazoo Avenue
