Treatments for Neck Pain

Your Treatment Begins Here

Usually pain improves with over-the-counter medicine, specific strengthening exercises and other forms of self-care remedies. Neck pain can be prevented by maintaining a healthy weight, reducing emotional stress that may cause muscle spasm and doing exercises that improve balance.

If your chronic pain persists, alternatives to try before surgery include acupuncture, physical therapy and injections to the pain area. We want to try all non-surgical options before concluding surgery is the right path for you. Together, you and your care team will determine the right treatment plan for you. Review some options below to prepare for your appointment.

Treatments We Provide

Corticosteroid Injections

Corticosteroids that are injected have a higher potency than oral anti-inflammatory medications. That means they have more potential to give you greater relief from pain.

Physical Therapy

Often physical therapy is part of your post-surgery recovery plan. Physical therapy is also used to prevent and relieve pain from many conditions, whether neurological or sports-related. Work with our physical therapists to restore strength and a healthy lifestyle.

Spine Care Rehabilitation

When dealing with back and neck pain, it’s important to start with conservative care, such as physical therapy. Spectrum Health has a Spine and Pain Management Center dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of back pain.

For severe, chronic neck pain, surgery may be the best option. Pain may be caused by a compressed nerve root or spinal cord compression. Surgery may be the only option to relieve this pain.
