Ion Channel Disorders
Ion channel disorders of muscles and nerves (channelopathies) are very rare disorders which may cause a variety of different symptoms including muscle stiffness, episodic weakness or paralysis, muscle twitching, or problems with balance. Diagnosis is typically made by a detailed neuromuscular examination, electrodiagnostic testing (EMG), and often times, genetic testing. There are symptomatic treatments for many of these disorders so early diagnosis is important.
