Living well during cancer treatment

Week 1: personal action plan

You probably know your treatment team well, but there is one valuable member of your team you may be forgetting--you! Learn to be empowered and in control of your treatment with the efforts you give and the choices you make. We will discuss the value of setting goals and teach you about complementary care resources including art classes, music therapy, massage therapy and more. You will receive a journal to take notes, write goals and keep track of your progress.

Week 2: cancer rehabilitation

Learn to preserve your quality of life and to strategically manage common side effects including pain, fatigue, and weakness. Staying active should play an instrumental role in the cancer journey, and you will learn how to incorporate exercise safely into your daily routine. You will also try a brief exercise routine and will receive a resistance band so you can continue at home. Please wear comfortable clothing and supportive footwear.

Week 3: nutrition

Nutrition is often impacted by both cancer and its treatments. Learn how to make good choices with your diet, which will improve your energy and help your body heal faster. Discover strategies and tips to manage nutrition related side effects including nausea, constipation, mouth sores, altered appetite, and more.

Week 4: social work

Are you making the most of your insurance benefits? Do you know your opportunities for financial support? These questions will be answered in this session. We will go over forms for insurance, advance directives and financial support foundations. Learn how to manage emotional and practical challenges of the cancer journey using resources including financial counselors, support groups, and counseling services.
