My favorite part of our program is the people! A large number of our faculty members trained here and decided to stay and practice and that has created an environment with a lot of pride and comradery. Our PD is very caring and our entire support team works constantly to take good care of us which I really appreciate.

Living in West Michigan: West Michigan is the perfect place for people who love the outdoors! There is so much to explore from hiking and kayaking in our state parks to lake lounging and winter sports and we never had trouble making plans for the weekend. Northern Michigan also has tons of fabulous wineries and Grand Rapids is known as "Beer City USA" with dozens of local craft breweries. • Merrifield_Brittany

    Brittany Merrifield, MD

    Hometown: Traverse City, MI
Medical School: Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine

Why did you choose Spectrum Health?
I loved the wide variety and access to sub-specialties, volume, and acuity of the patient population.  This program will train you to be a competent generalist or to pursue fellowship if you desire.

What do you like most about your program?
I really enjoy the opportunity to see very rare kinds of pathology, as the main referral center for the West and Northern parts of Michigan.  This especially applies to MFM and gyn oncology.  Additionally, we are trained to be very competent generalists with the sheer volume of the "bread and butter" OBGYN cases we are responsible to care for.  The labor and delivery volume of this program is hard to rival and as such has made me very confident in obstetrics.

Clinical Interests: I am interested in maternal fetal medicine and plan to pursue a fellowship.

Living in West Michigan: I love all of the outdoor activities including trail hikes and Lake Michigan beaches and dunes.Commuting is easy, cost of living is relatively low, there are many neighborhoods to choose from each with their own flare.  The Fulton St Farmers Market is a wonderful spring and summer activity.  There are a wide variety of restaurants including my favorite, street tacos! The Grand Rapids Art Museum has a summer concert series on the square downtown that has wine, beer, and food trucks.

HobbiesMy hobbies include running (trail, road, or treadmill in the winter!), food and wine, travel (I love the Southwest!), and my family!

  • Oswald_Kristyn

    Kristyn Oswald, MD

    Hometown: Byron Center, MI
Medical School: Michigan State University College of Human Medicine

Why did you choose Spectrum Health?
I chose Spectrum Health OB/GYN for the location, experience and people. West Michigan is a wonderful place to live, and it is close to my family and friends which was important to me. Being a medical student here, I was amazed at the high volume and knew that I would like to be in a place that also provided high numbers for learning opportunities. Also from being a student here, I was able to see the great relationship that the residents had not only with each other but with the attending physicians and other faculty. Everyone worked as a team and they were inclusive and willing to teach, creating an environment that I knew would be a perfect fit for me as a resident.

What do you like most about your program?
I think that the two best attributes of our program are the high volume and the people. While the high volume can make for busy days, it allows for an incredible amount of learning opportunities and experiences that I am so grateful for. With our high volume, I am also grateful for the people that I get to work alongside with every day. There is an atmosphere of teamwork and encouragement that I think makes for a great learning environment.

Clinical Interests: My clinical interests are obstetrics, women's health, gynecologic surgery, and contraceptive counseling.

Living in West Michigan: I love West Michigan. Being from the area, I am a little biased but I think it's a wonderful place to live! I am very grateful that my friends and family live here, but if they didn't it's nice that most other places in Michigan are still within driving distance. There are a lot of fun places to visit and I absolutely love being within 30 minutes of the lakeshore. Living in West Michigan, I also love that we get to experience all of the seasons, and that there are many opportunities for fun things to do during each of those seasons. Such as going to the beach in the summer, driving up north during the fall to look at the beautiful colors or going skiing/ snowboarding in the winter.

HobbiesMy hobbies include spending time with my husband and our families and friends nearby. We really enjoy playing board, card and yard games. We have a local church and small group that we are involved with and love being a part of. Being a Michigan State grad, I am also a huge Spartan fan and love going to college football and basketball games or simply cheering them on from home when I can. When I'm not doing any of these things, I also like to think that browsing the aisles of Marshall's or Hobby lobby counts as a hobby.

  • Sternberg_Grace

    Grace Sterenberg, MD

    Hometown: Grand Haven, MI
Medical School: Michigan State University College of Human Medicine

Why did you choose Spectrum Health?
I grew up in West Michigan and have always loved it. I wanted to stay close to family and still get the best training possible.  I loved the volume that this program had to offer, and I got along with everyone I met during interviews and rotating as a medical student.

What do you like most about your program?
Besides the large volume and variety of patients (and my co-residents of course), my favorite part about this program would have to be the faculty.  I learn something different from each attending I work with, and getting to form relationships with each of them as I grow in my training as been very enjoyable.

Clinical Interests: At this point I'm still trying to decide what my specific clinical interests are.  I really enjoy the fast paced days on labor and delivery, but I'm looking forward to spending more time in the operating room and office this year.  I ultimately plan to be a generalist.

Living in West Michigan: My favorite part about living in West Michigan is being close to friends and family, but I also love being near the beach.  There are lots of great parks to take my dog to, and constantly new bars and restaurants opening up to try.

HobbiesI like to spend my free time with the people I love most! - My fiance Zac and my golden retriever puppy Nellie especially, as well as my family who all live in the area.  I love to drink wine and I really like to read - If I get the time to do both of those things outdoors, I'm a happy girl!

Clinical Interests: I am passionate about high risk obstetrics, and most recently, I have become fascinated by minimally invasive gynecology. Medical School: Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine

Why did you choose Spectrum Health?
I chose Spectrum Health due to its affiliation with Michigan State University, the clinical volume and exposure to all subspecialties within OB/GYN.

What do you like most about your program?
As a result of the significant clinical volume and acting as a referring center for Western Michigan, residents in our program learn appropriate management of both common and high acuity/rare conditions.

Clinical Interests: I am interested in clinical and translational research within the field of reproductive biology. I am particularly interested in understanding endometrial function during embryo implantation and disruption of these mechanisms in conditions such as recurrent pregnancy loss and endometriosis.

Living in West Michigan: West Michigan, particularly Grand Rapids, offers many of the benefits of city-living including restaurants, museums, and concerts without the hassle of living in a big city.

HobbiesI enjoy spending time with my wife and dogs.

Why did you choose Spectrum Health?
I choose Spectrum Health for residency because of its volume and variety of cases due to being the main referral center for West Michigan. I was also attracted to its supportive culture of team-work.

What do you like most about your program?
My co-residents are the most wonderful colleagues and friends. I also feel extremely confident in the skills that I have learned over the years in this program. Without fellows, we are lucky to be directly involved in every case even on subspecialty services.

Clinical Interests: I am planning to become a generalist, with special interest in minimally invasive surgery.

Living in West Michigan: Grand Rapids is a great city. There are lots of good restaurants and breweries. The proximity to Lake Michigan is great in the summer time. Its also not too far from Chicago, that it is easy to zip down for a weekend.

HobbiesMy hobbies include cooking, gardening, spending time with friends, and traveling.
