  • Summers-Daniel

    Daniel Summers,  MD

    Hometown: Grand Rapids, MI
    Medical School: Ross University

Why did you choose Spectrum Health?
I chose Spectrum Health for a few reasons.  One reason is that Grand Rapids is my home, so I have a lot of family and friend support here.  Another reason is I knew I would see a diverse range of pathology since this is the main tertiary referral center for all of West Michigan, and the most important reason is because of the people I met during my interview and interview dinner.

What do you like most about your program?
We have a great culture in our program.  Everyone goes above and beyond to put in extra work to help out our fellow residents.  It's easy to see that we all enjoy working with one another.

  • Tomaszewski-Travis

    Travis Tomaszewski, DO

    Hometown: Stevensville, M
Medical School: Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine - Seton Hill

Why did you choose Spectrum Health?
I chose to spend my residency at Spectrum Health for many reasons, but mostly what sold me was my interactions with the people here. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming on my interview day. Spectrum Health is expanding their subspecialty departments rapidly with many new faculty members that are excited to teach. There is also the benefit of being located in Grand Rapids, one of the fastest growing cities in the Midwest.

What do you like most about your program?
After being at Spectrum Health for one year I couldn't be happier with my decision to come here. It is better than I could have imagined. Learning and resident wellness are the highest priority here. Dr. Bragg makes sure to check in with residents often and make sure things are going well, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. We were never put on the front lines until we were more than prepared to deal with COVID patients. We are challenged, but we are not over-worked and are still able to have personal lives outside of the hospital. All of the faculty are willing to spend extra time to teach, no matter how busy their days are.

Clinical Interests: I'm interested in becoming a hospitalist. I enjoy the mix of diseases that you can treat as a hospitalist and it keeps you up to date on many of the subspecialties.

Living in West Michigan: West Michigan is one of the friendliest areas. I grew up in Southwest Michigan and completed my medical school training in Pennsylvania, so when I was able to move to Grand Rapids it felt like coming back home. There are so many beautiful areas to explore from nature trails, the Manistee National Forest, and being so close to Lake Michigan. There are so many things to do downtown, you can easily find something going on every weekend. I am planning on staying in Grand Rapids long term.

Hobbies: I enjoy spending time with my fiancée trying out new restaurants and breweries, there always seems to be new ones popping up. There's a reason Grand Rapids is called Beer City USA. We also enjoy going up north to go skiing (easily drive-able for a day trip). During the summertime there are countless opportunities to explore the outdoors as well. I am also a proud University of Michigan alumni so I try to go to at least a few Michigan football games every year.

Class of 2021

  • Alam_Salar

    Salar Alam, MD

    Hometown: Bahawalpur, Pakistan
Medical School: Aga Khan University Pakistan

Why did you choose Spectrum Health?
During my time here as a medical student and on my interview/tour days, I saw how the current residents genuinely liked each other and the environment was very welcoming. I was also impressed by the variety of pathology we encountered in the hospital, including rare syndromes one only expects to see in major university hospitals.

What do you like most about your program?
Being a smaller program means people know each other personally and there is no malignant culture here. I love the camaraderie among the residents and the support from our program leadership.

Clinical Interests: My clinical interests are clinical nephrology, especially chronic kidney disease.

Living in West Michigan: West Michigan has a unique charm to it. Being so close to Lake Michigan and parks makes it a great place for all nature lovers. A variety of beaches, sand dunes, forests, lakes and trails are just a short drive away. Along with that Grand Rapids is a rapidly growing medium sized city that is not overcrowded like large metropolitan cities but has all the other advantages that bigger cities offer.

Hobbies: I like nature photography including landscapes and animals, especially birds. I enjoy discovering new music and going to concerts. I love watching and playing soccer.
  • Mahrukh Fatima Akram, MD

    Hometown: Rawalpindi, Pakistan
Medical School: Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan

Why did you choose Spectrum Health?
I did an observership in Internal Medicine at Spectrum Health and was greatly impressed by the range of pathologies the residents saw, as well as the friendly and supportive environment created by the faculty to encourage learning. I also grew very fond of Grand Rapids as a city, and looked forward to returning for a longer period of time.

What do you like most about your program?
While there are many things I like about my program, what stands out most is the immense support residents get from each other, faculty and program leadership. Everyone works together to make sure we learn and develop into good physicians over the three years we are here.

Clinical Interests: I wish to pursue a fellowship in cardiology.

Living in West Michigan: I enjoy the fact that we have access to all sorts of entertainment - beautiful parks, hiking trails, beaches, concerts, plays, great restaurants - and Chicago and Detroit are at reasonable driving distance for occasional weekend getaways.

Hobbies: I like to read books and spend time outdoors.

    Michelle Walker, MD

I chose Spectrum because I felt comfortable with the residents on interview day, love Grand Rapids and felt confident about the severity and variety of pathology I could see here.

My favorite part about the program is the people. My colleagues make the long days feel shorter and the tough days feel easier. I feel supported and welcome here.

Clinical Interests: I love acute and subacute care. I have a heart for the geriatric population and am pursuing geriatrics for fellowship.

Living in West Michigan: I love that Grand Rapids has all the activities and resources of a big city while still maintaining a smaller community feel. It is also very convenient being close to the Great Lakes.

Hobbies: My hobbies include cooking, gardening, fostering kittens, boating and traveling.
