Class of 2026

  • Jason Aubrey, MBBS

    Hometown: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

    Medical school: University of Limerick

Why did you choose Spectrum Health for your residency/fellowship? My interactions with the residents and faculty during interview season were very positive and welcoming. It was evident the program had a supportive culture amongst the residents and everyone spoke highly of their training and opportunities. I also loved the idea of a hybrid program, giving the best of both community and academic general surgery in one place.

What are your clinical interests? At this time I am most interested in acute care surgery and surgical critical care, but I am open and excited to explore the various fields within general surgery.

Hobbies: I enjoy spending time reading, hiking, exercising, watching sports, playing board games/cards and relaxing with friends and family.

  • Jacob Boersma, MD

    Hometown: Grand Rapids, MI

Medical school: Michigan State University College of Human Medicine

Why did you choose Spectrum Health for your residency/fellowship? Grand Rapids has always been home and I was grateful to have the opportunity to continue my medical training in my home city. Grand Rapids is a great place to live and raise a family. We have a lot to do here, from outdoor activities on Lake Michigan to some of the best breweries in the nation. Grand Rapids is also a city that is well-known for its excellence in providing health care. I knew I would be working with many excellent physicians who will challenge me daily to continue to grow in my profession.

What are your clinical interests? I am interested in either orthopaedic surgery or general surgery. I am undecided on a sub-specialty at this time.

Hobbies: I am married, so first and foremost, I enjoy spending time with my wife. I enjoy traveling, hiking and camping at national parks. I enjoy skiing in all forms (downhill, water, cross country). I am a former collegiate athlete and I currently enjoy playing co-ed and men's league softball. Finally, I enjoy reading and running. I have run a couple half-marathons and hope to complete a full marathon some day.

  • Hannah Bohr, MD

    Hometown: Williamsport, PA

Medical school: Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine

Why did you choose Spectrum Health for your residency/fellowship? The Spectrum Health faculty is top-notch, the subspecialty exposure is all-encompassing and I am confident I will receive diverse and plentiful operative experience; the supportive nature of my colleagues and co-residents is an added bonus! It sounds incredibly cliche, but my interactions with the faculty and residents on interview day ultimately sealed the deal for me!

What are your clinical interests? My clinical interests are broad, which is one of several reasons why I decided to pursue general surgery. I had wonderful experiences rotating in pediatric surgery, emergency general surgery and thoracic surgery while in medical school.

Hobbies: I enjoy playing sports and outdoor activities - hiking, biking, kayaking, skiing, etc! I also love baking, DIY projects and spending time with family and friends!

  • Alex Finn, MD

    Hometown: Fond du Lac, WI

Medical school: University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health

Why did you choose Spectrum Health for your residency/fellowship? Spectrum Health's general surgery program was appealing to me because it has the perfect mix of academic and community programs and has fantastic hospitals to train in. It will prepare me to go straight into practice out of residency while not restricting fellowship opportunities.

What are your clinical interests? I aspire to be a community general surgeon that can bring excellent and safe care to my parents.

Hobbies: I enjoy traveling to different state and national parks, hiking, camping and trying new food with my wife and two children.

  • Younes Jahangiri, MD

    Hometown: Ardabil, Iran

Medical school: Iran University of Medical Sciences

Why did you choose Spectrum Health for your residency/fellowship? Three major factors encouraged my selection of Spectrum Health for training; large case volume, diversity of pathologies and resident autonomy.

What are your clinical interests? Despite having a special interest in minimally-invasive image-guided spinal, musculoskeletal and venous procedures, I am keeping an open mind in the field. My interests might change as new technologies emerge in the field of interventional radiology.

Hobbies: If not at work, I can be found spending time with my daughter and wife, playing indoor volleyball, hiking, cooking local food or playing the violin.

  • Aaron Leach, MD

    Hometown: Marquette, MI

Medical school: Michigan State University College of Human Medicine

Why did you choose Spectrum Health for your residency/fellowship? I had the opportunity to do two clinical rotations in diagnostic and interventional radiology at Spectrum Health. My diagnostic radiology rotation was done online with the residents and attendings and I had an excellent learning experience. I was able to see the comradery between the residents and was able to witness the friendly relationship the residents had with the attendings. My interventional radiology rotation was done in person at Spectrum Health. It was my favorite time during medical school. The wide variety of pathology and the large volume of procedures performed provided me an outstanding learning experience. The attendings are all very intelligent, kind and hard-working, and when the opportunity to apply for a position in Spectrum Health's new interventional radiology residency program arose it was an easy decision.

What are your clinical interests? I am interested in a wide variety of interventional radiology treatments. I am interested in the more common procedures that are done day-to-day, but I am also interested in interventional neuroradiology, pain management, oncology and peripheral vascular disease.

Medical school: Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine

Why did you choose Spectrum Health for your residency/fellowship? Spectrum Health provides a wide variety of both clinical and research opportunities while still allowing for a lot of operating time and hands-on experience. I enjoyed getting to know residents and faculty during my interviews and felt like they would be great people to work with. I was also really excited about moving to West Michigan.

What are your clinical interests? I am interested in general surgery as well as colorectal surgery and surgical oncology. I am looking forward to exploring my interests more throughout my residency.

Hobbies: I enjoy running, reading, swimming, being outdoors and tasting wines. I love spending time with my husband and our dog, Sadie, and being with family and friends.

  • Myles Mowery, DO, MBA

    Hometown: Grand Rapids, MI

    Medical school: Kansas City University

Why did you choose Spectrum Health for your residency/fellowship? Before I left my home in West Michigan for medical school, I worked for four years in the radiology department at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital as a radiology support specialist. This job was a big part of the reason I decided to go into medicine and ultimately decided to pursue radiology. When I applied to residency, I had fond memories of the fast-paced, high-volume work environment of the radiology department at Butterworth Hospital. I also got to interact with most of the radiologists in the department, many of which are now involved in the training in both the diagnostic and interventional radiology training programs. So, going into interview season, I already knew this program was packed full of a group of stellar attending physicians in a work environment I remembered favorably. I did an away rotation here during interview season and was pleasantly surprised. The attending radiologists were just as great to work with as I remembered them to be, and they did an excellent job in furthering my radiology knowledge through teaching sessions. Additionally, the residents were a great group of people who seemed like they were genuinely happy where they were training. Further, the staff of the radiology department were very pleasant to work with and were very helpful in answering my questions. Aside from an excellent training environment, the West Michigan area is a great place to live. There are so many things to do ranging from hanging out on the beaches of Lake Michigan in the hot summers, to skiing/snowboarding in the winter. There are also tons of bars and restaurants downtown, lots of concert venues with a range of capacities that attract artists of all and has lots of unique events downtown throughout the calendar year. I am very excited to be returning to both West Michigan and Spectrum Health.

What are your clinical interests? My clinical interests include both diagnostic and interventional radiology, but also quality improvement in radiology.

Hobbies: My two main hobbies are music and exercise. As for music I enjoy a lot of metalcore/djent/hard-rock stuff (I branch out beyond this a bit into the realms of alternative, R&B and rap too a bit.) I really love playing guitar, attending concerts, writing/recording music and stuff like that. I used to play guitar in a metalcore band here in West Michigan before medical school and would love to start playing live shows again one day. As for exercise, I love running in the hot/humid summer weather. I enjoy weight training too and just generally trying to stay healthy. Aside from the above, I enjoy trying new breweries and food, going to the beach, traveling, skiing, video games and other stuff.

The global health work in the surgery department was also something that attracted me to the program.

  • Douglas Snow, MD, MPH

    Hometown: Alpena, MI

Medical school: Michigan State University College of Human Medicine

Why did you choose Spectrum Health for your residency/fellowship? During my sub-Internship, I was able to work with the faculty and residents. I always felt a great sense of family and hard work. They all showed a strong passion for their patients and learning.

Medical school: Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine

I rotated here as a visiting fourth year medical student and was impressed by how skilled the residents were at this program. The sense of trust and respect was clearly evident between the faculty and residents.

What do you like most about your program?
I love the people I get to work alongside everyday. The faculty are incredible and push me to achieve my full potential and my co residents are an amazing group of individuals who are always ready to support each other whenever help is needed.

Why did you choose Spectrum Health?
Spectrum Health provided the opportunity to engage in a healthy mix of bread and butter surgical cases as well as high complexity cases due to the large catchment area which was exactly what I was looking for in a program. After arriving for my interview and meeting the residents, I immediately felt a sense of belonging and knew I could fit in with the family-like atmosphere created by program.

What do you like most about your program?
The residents and faculty that you work with are phenomenal. Countless times I have heard from off-service residents and medical students about how pleasant it is working with our program.

Clinical Interests: I plan to end up in a city or town no bigger than Grand Rapids allowing myself the opportunity to practice a large breath of surgical procedures.

Living in West Michigan: Grand Rapids is a city with all the amenities of a metropolitan area but with the small town feel of community. The outdoor activities available including a number of beaches, hiking trails, ski hills (even if they can't compare to the Rockies) and multiple lakes within a short drive make the lifestyle in Grand Rapids a hidden gem.

HobbiesI snowboard and skate in the winter time. I have recently picked up paddle boarding to go along with photography hikes. When I am at home I find myself playing video games or watching sports.

    Kristin Wempe, MD

    Hometown: Mitchell, SD
Medical School: Sanford School of Medicine - Vermillion, SD

Why did you choose Spectrum Health?
As I went through the interview process, I realized that the majority of surgical programs would give me an excellent training experience. Spectrum Health did not disappoint in that aspect. What drew me and put this program above others was the culture between residents and staff. I laughed and joked through my entire interview experience, I knew I would be happy to do 24 hour call shifts with these people.

What do you like most about your program?
We have such incredible faculty here that truly want us to be the best we can be. We are pushed to excel and supported through every day. My co-residents are amazing and our ancillary staff was above any expectations.

Clinical Interests: My clinical interests is community general surgery.

Living in West Michigan: Definite step up from South Dakota! The beach is so close and I love the water and sun. There is so much variety here in terms of things to do, beers to drink, and restaurants to go to. The mixture of young and modern with old and Dutch in the city gives Grand Rapids a cool vibe.

HobbiesI would lie if I didn't say sleep was one of my favorite activities. Beach time takes up my summer off hours, as well as weeding and landscaping since I bought my house! Exercise has become a new fun part of my life this last year - hello resident wellness! Of course exploring the many many many local breweries and wineries with my co-residents is important too.
