  • purohit-eesha

     Eesha Purohit MD

    Hometown: Terre Haute, IN
Medical School: Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA

Why did you choose Spectrum Health? I chose Spectrum Health for cardiology fellowship because of the people. When I was a resident I became good friends with an infectious disease fellow who had done residency at Spectrum Health and she only had good things to say. When I interviewed everyone was friendly and welcoming and I got the impression that this was a place I would want to train at and stay.

What do you like most about your program? I am looking forward to learning and building new relationships.

Clinical Interests: I love all cardiology and am still deciding what I would want to specialize in, right now I am between interventional and electrophysiology.

Living in West Michigan: I am excited to be near the lake and also looking forward to getting in some good hiking!

HobbiesI enjoy spending time with my family, working out, tennis, board games, zumba and hiking.

  • kajy-marvin

    Marvin Kajy MD

    Hometown: Farmington Hills, MI
Medical School: Wayne State University School of Medicine

Why did you choose Spectrum Health?
I chose Spectrum Health for my fellowship training for multiple reasons. It is a tertiary care center that offers all subspecialties of cardiology and thereby exposing the fellow to all aspects of cardiology. The faculty foster an environment of learning and mentorship. It has great research opportunities. Out of all the programs that I interviewed at, I felt that this program would provide me with the greatest opportunity to grow as a physician.

What do you like most about your program?
I am looking forward to an exciting year where I can learn how to manage a range of cardiac conditions and learn how to perform cardiovascular procedures.

Clinical Interests: My clinical interests are mechanical circulatory support, anticoagulation, atrial fibrillation and advanced heart failure.

Living in West Michigan: The people are very nice and the area caters to many interests. You can do many outdoor activities, enjoy arts and music, play professional sport and enjoy the local food scene.

Hobbies: My hobbies are playing soccer, running and watching movies.

Class of 2022

  • MadisonChris

    Chris Madison, MD

    Hometown: Pueblo, CO
    Medical School: University of Cincinnati

Why did you choose Spectrum Health?
The cardiologists at Spectrum Health are passionate about providing excellent care for each patient, dedicated to teaching fellows and are down-to-earth people. Spectrum Health is a tertiary care center that draws from a large geographical area, which gives fellows abundant opportunities to learn from a high volume of procedures and studies.

What do you like most about your program?
The attendings, fellows and support staff enjoy their work. The expectation is we work hard and maximize the opportunities available including didactics, clinical rotations and research.

Clinical Interests: I find all areas of cardiology interesting and rewarding in their own ways.

Living in West Michigan: We have four season in West Michigan which gives a chance to enjoy the snow in the winter and the beaches on nearby Lake Michigan in the summer. Grand Rapids is a fun city with plenty of delicious restaurants to enjoy.

Hobbies:I love spending time with my wife. We prioritize time with our church and small group. I enjoy running, hiking, cycling and I play piano and guitar.
  • LahdanRefahiyatMD

    Lahdan Refahiyat, MD

    Hometown: Salt Lake City, Utah
    Medical School: Michigan State University

Why did you choose Spectrum Health?
Spectrum Health, like Grand Rapids, is a hidden gem. Since moving to Grand Rapids for medical school, I have had the pleasure of seeing the city and Spectrum Health grow. We have achieved the seemingly elusive goal of being a tertiary center, with state-of-the-art medicine and technology that runs on people who are genuinely caring and approachable. I am continually impressed by not only how intelligent and hard working my colleagues and mentors are, but also by how kind and generous they are to trainees and staff. I get the opportunity, every day to work in an environment that challenges me to be better and that also brings me joy.

What do you like most about your program?
The cardiovascular disease fellowship program is truly amazing. I don't think that anything I can say would truly suffice as its value is largely due to the people who are a part of it. While the foundation of the program is built on an incredible cardiovascular center in which we are exposed to a large volume of any and all pathologies that can occur in the cardiovascular world, the faculty and staff truly give life to this program. The faculty are genuinely eager to teach trainees. They show passion and joy for what they do and this really sets the tone for our work environment. I have never met another group of people who work hard, and are as smart and at the same time are really grounded, normal people who also like to have a laugh and enjoy life.

Clinical Interests: I have the fortune of loving all aspects of cardiology! Thus, I have yet to decide if I will subspecialize, but I hope to make that decision soon.

Living in West Michigan: West Michigan is a great place for anyone who likes to be active and enjoy the outdoors! We are a 30 minute drive away from Lake Michigan where we have access to beautiful, soft sand beaches. There are countless biking and hiking trails that are just 10-15 minutes from the hospital / downtown area. Runners, bikers and yogis will love this area! Most importantly, West Michigan is the best place to make random friends given how friendly everyone is!

Hobbies: I love to be outdoors whenever possible! Biking and playing basketball with friends are some of my regular warm weather activities. I love to read (like the nerd that I am) - we have several really great, truly beautiful libraries (including the original Grand Rapids library that's just a few blocks from the hospital). I also practice yoga and play the violin. Our local delicious restaurants also make dining out with friends a regular activity!

Class of 2021

  • Wilkinson

    Stephen E. Wilkinson, MD

    Hometown: Provo, UT
    Medical School:
    Creighton University School of Medicine

Why did you choose Spectrum Health? Amazing volumes, facilities, faculty, and town. There are few programs in the country as strong in as many areas of cardiology as Spectrum Health. In bigger cities, there is competition for transplants or advanced interventional procedures, with some hospitals specializing and others lacking. In smaller cities, advanced cases are referred out to tertiary centers. We have it all at the Meijer Heart Center! I knew I would be excellently prepared for a career in whatever area of cardiology I decided to pursue by training here.

What do you like most about your program?
The amazing commitment to fellows and our education. The faculty truly care about us as individuals and as budding cardiologists. There are so many resources devoted to ensuring that we have a world-class education. It's awesome! The program also highly values our families, which has been golden.

Clinical Interests: My clinical interests are interventional procedures, general cardiology and patient education.

Living in West Michigan: It is such a beautiful place! The outdoors are hard to beat. It's also one of the most charitable areas of the country and people genuinely care about making their community and the world a better place.

Hobbies: My wife and I have gotten into kayaking since moving here. We can hit at least three different docks to put in on the Grand River within 10 minutes from our home. The biking trails are also awesome! We enjoy traveling and sight-seeing, and Michigan has tons to offer on that front too.
