Clinical Simulation and Professional Development
The Clinical Simulation and Professional Development team is committed to providing quality educational training through the availability of various skills labs, simulation experiences and certified courses. Our facilities and resources are available to our residency programs, affiliated partners and by special arrangement. We offer certification and re-certification courses, skills lab and various high fidelity simulation. Our personnel offer services such as curriculum development, course development, e-learning, skills training, teaching and simulation design, scenario building, programming and operating. Simulation occurs in the simulation center and within our hospital system.
Spectrum Health resident and fellowship programs may contact our office to arrange services. Others interested in scheduling training activities may contact our office to discuss your needs and obtain a schedule of fees.
Our multidisciplinary training facility features nine multipurpose simulation labs and two lecture rooms. The simulation labs provide state of the art simulation equipment including high fidelity infant, child and adult simulators as well as many task trainers. We are equipped with TraumaMan simulators, laparoscopic trainers, ultrasound training phantoms and ultrasound equipment.

Courses and Skills Training
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
ACLS is an American Heart Association-certified course. We offer certification and recertification courses. The goal of the ACLS course is to equip health care providers in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. Upon successful completion of these courses the participant will meet the specific goals and objectives as outlined by the American Heart Association and receive a two year certification.
Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
The ATLS Student Course presents a concise approach to assessing and managing multiple injured patients. The American College of Surgeons and its Committee on Trauma have developed the ATLS program for doctors and is a systematic, concise training for the early care of trauma patients. This is a two day course. Upon successful completion of course, the participant will receive a four year Advanced Trauma Certification. The ATLS Certification course is offered annually in September and is open to outside registrants. Our June ATLS course is a closed course.
We also offer a recertification course annually in November that is open to outside registrants. Recertification courses are also offered for participants whose ATLS certification have not lapsed for more than six months and is a half day course.
Basic Life Support (BLS)
The BLS course is an American Heart Association-certified course. The goal of the BLS for health care providers course is to train participants to save lives of those in cardiac arrest through the use of high quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Upon successful completion of the course, the participant will receive a two year certification. We utilize the American Heart Association's online didactic course followed by simulation testing in our simulation labs.
When registered for a course, we will provide you with instructions and a computer training access code. When you are ready to begin training, visit onlineaha.org and click the 'register' link on the left sidebar to register. You do not need to register if you have done so in the past. If you have forgotten your password, you can use the 'Need Help Logging In' link at the top of the page. Once you have registered or logged in, you will be taken to the 'My Courses' page where there is a link to 'Activate a Key' for this course. You will need the key number provided by us. You will only be required to enter this key one time. Upon completion of the module and a successful score for the online test, you will need to print/save the certificate for entrance to the skills testing portion.
Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (FCCS)
The FCCS course is certified by the Society for Critical Care Medicine and is a two day course. Curriculum introduces principles important in the initial care of critically ill/injured patients. The course is intended for physicians, physicians-in–training, nurses, and other health care providers who may or may not be skilled in critical care, but must care for such patients during early stabilization and in anticipation of the arrival of an intensivist, specialist or pending transfer of the patient to a tertiary center.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
The PALS course is an American Heart Association-certified course. Certification and recertification courses are offered. The participant will reinforce and enhance skills in the treatment of pediatric arrest and other pediatric emergencies. Upon successful completion of the course, a two year certification will be received.
Pediatric Fundamentals of Critical Care Support Course (PFCCS)
The PFCCS course is certified by the Society for Critical Care Medicine. This is a comprehensive two day course which addresses fundamental management principles for the first 24 hours of post-resuscitation management of the critically ill or injured pediatric patient until transfer or appropriate critical care consultation can be arranged. We currently offer this course to Spectrum Health Pediatric and Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residents only.
Additional Skills Training Opportunities
Besides multiple certification courses, we provide many opportunities for skills training via simulation. Residency and fellowship programs, as well as partnering institutions, may contact us to arrange skills training sessions, testing, and in-situ simulation. In addition, we encourage individual residents to contact us to make arrangements for individual skills practice and will work with you to customize and meet your needs.
Courses are offered free of charge to Spectrum Health residents and fellows. At times, we have course availability for outside registrants.
