A Commitment to Improving Health
Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital is the result of a vision and investment – the vision set forth over 80 years ago was for access to excellent healthcare to support the people of our community – the investments are from those who have made charitable contributions to sustain our work.
Thanks to generous donations from our community, the Spectrum Health Foundation Zeeland Community Hospital supports a wide range of hospital and community needs.
Impact Made by You in 2020
This past year, Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital partnered with community and public health organizations to pilot the school blue envelope program, which initiates a plan of action when a student has thoughts of suicide. Because of philanthropy, over 250 school staff were trained as Level 1 responders (one hour training) and 57 were trained as Level 2 responders (two hour training). Philanthropy ensured training materials were developed and distributed in print and digital formats, in both English and Spanish. After the trainings took place, there was a 44 percent increase in school staff’s knowledge of suicide prevention and 54 percent increase in school staff’s confidence when responding to a student expressing suicidal thoughts. There was also a remarkable 240 percent increase in knowledge of how to keep students and staff safe. For the 2020-2021 school year, the school blue envelope program expanded to train staff at Saugatuck Middle and High Schools, Holland High School, West Ottawa High School, Harbor Lights Middle School and Pine Creek Elementary.
The instinct to protect your children is hardwired in every parent. The injury prevention program, sustained 100 percent through philanthropy, helps busy families keep safety at the forefront with the goal of eliminating unintentional childhood injury and death. In the past year, the injury prevention team has worked hard to make sure our youngest citizens are safe, whether in the car or on their bike. This is made possible because of philanthropy like yours!
It is humbling to be the recipient of the Spectrum Health Foundation Zeeland Community Hospital Nursing Scholarship. I am honored to serve the community that I live in, and the spirit of this scholarship reaffirms my gratitude for the hearts of the people in our community. The importance of caring for each other as humans has never been more necessary than now during these pandemic times. I am honored to use the education to improve myself, our organization, and our community. My goal is to serve the community I love in way that makes a better tomorrow. Thank for partnering with me in this goal by providing the scholarship educational opportunity.
