A Commitment to Improving Health
Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital is the result of a vision and investment – the vision set forth over 80 years ago was for access to excellent healthcare to support the people of our community – the investments are from those who have made charitable contributions to sustain our work.
Thanks to generous donations from our community, the Spectrum Health Foundation Zeeland Community Hospital supports a wide range of hospital and community needs.
Impact Made by You in 2019
Philanthropy enabled Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital (SHZCH) to purchase a BioVision, which enables our physicians to instantly confirm breast biopsy speciments in the room during a biopsy procedure, eliminating the need for the radiologist to leave the room and saving time. This machine can also be rolled into an operating room during surgical biopsy, allowing the surgeon to see the specimens immediately and decreasing the amount of time the patient is under anesthesia. The BioVision has been an incredible convenience for radiologists, surgeons, technologists and ultimately, the patients.
Thank you note from Marnie Pierce, RN, BSN (Clinical Surgery Supervisor, SHZCH):
“Thank you so much for the scholarship that helped me attend the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Global Surgical Conference and Expo. I so appreciated being able to attend this annual conference with operative nurses and leadership from across the globe. The five day conference was filled with speakers discussing topics covering all aspects of care for the surgical patient from pre-admission testing to surgery and all the way through recovery. I was able to bring back information to our surgical project specialists about a reaction that a small percentage of patients have to bone cement during total joint procedures. In addition, I was able to discuss several positioning aids for daVinci robot cases with many nurses and product specialists. There were also many research posters on this topic, which allowed me to share a wealth of information as we begin our first daVinci cases at SHZCH. There were many other learning opportunities and information I have been able to share to supplement our care at SHZCH. Thank you for this opportunity.”
It was a very successful year for the Learning About Nutrition through Activities (LANA) Preschool Nutrition Program offered through Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital (SHZCH). The goals of this program are to increase children’s exposure to—and consumption of—fruits and vegetables and decrease their pickiness and neophobia, or fear of new things. Eating fruits and vegetables promotes healthy weight and reduces risk for cancer, heart disease, stroke and diabetes—making this a habit is one of the most important things children and adults can do to protect their health.
This past year, LANA was in eight school buildings throughout the Zeeland and Hudsonville school districts, reaching 42 preschool classes and 742 kids each month from October-April. This program takes place each month for 30-45 minutes per classroom, and involves a lesson, book, activity and a fruit or vegetable to sample. Each month has a theme that ties the lesson, book and activity together.
The instinct to protect your children is hardwired in you as a parent. The injury prevention program helps busy families keep safety at the forefront with the goal of eliminating unintentional childhood injury and death.
“Erin provided the most thorough and comprehensive car seat safety check we have ever had. She went above and beyond to show us proper safety protocol, installation, and fit. It was an amazing hands-on experience that allowed me piece of mind when securing my children safely in their car seats.” –Danielle Tamras, mom
