On November 29, Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial highlighted and awarded the efforts of all the men that had participated in the first annual Beards for Babies competition.  In addition to growing their facial hair over the month, these men were also fundraising for the Spectrum Health Foundation in support of the Gerber Memorial Family Birth Center and their efforts helped raise over $7,300!

These funds will help provide items such as diapers, safe sleep sacks and educational safe sleep books to local families welcoming new little ones.  In addition, these funds will also help to train and certify an additional lactation consultant for the Family Birth Center.   One hundred percent of the proceeds raised will stay local and directly impact Gerber Memorial Hospital patients and families!

On the evening of the event, our esteemed judging panel included Sue Auw of Classic Cuts for Men in Fremont; Kenzi Boerman and Melissa Rich of Snipperz Salon in Fremont; Jackie Kozitzki, RN at Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial; and Marsha Stasik of Newaygo.  The following were the winners from the Beard-Off Competition:

  • Best overall beard: Charlie Johnson, LifeLink coordinator at TrueNorth Community Services
  • Most unique beard: Josh Gustafson, director of community health at Gerber Memorial
  • Best effort beard: Eric Weaver, MD, at Gerber Memorial’s Multispecialty Clinic
  • Best mustache: Brian McClain, director of clinical and ambulatory services at Gerber Memorial
  • Top individual fundraiser: Scott Swinehart, financial advisor at Edward Jones in Newaygo, raised $1,020
  • Top fundraising team: “Itching for a Cause”, raised $1,810.

The Spectrum Health Foundation Gerber Memorial greatly thanks all of the enthusiastic participants, generous donors and wonderful judges.  If you missed the event or the opportunity to give to the Family Birth Center, you can still do so with an online gift today.
