Heart Surgery Quality Reports

Two of the most common open heart procedures are coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG) and cardiac valve repair or replacement surgery. CABG is the most common open heart operation in the United States, with more than 500,000 procedures performed each year. It can be performed to treat coronary artery disease (CAD) by bypassing a blocked coronary artery. Cardiac valve repair surgery is a treatment option for valvular heart disease. It allows a surgeon to fix or replace a faulty heart valve.

How is Spectrum Health performing on heart surgery?

Spectrum Health has been named nine times to Thomson Reuters' 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals, is accredited by The Joint Commission and has the only accredited chest pain center in West Michigan. We also have seven highly trained, certified and credentialed cardiovascular surgeons among more than 50 heart specialists.

We know practice makes perfect in health care as in most of life. That's why the number or volume of procedures that a hospital or a physician performs can be a valuable yardstick of clinical quality, especially when considered alongside additional quality measures and other factors. Volume is an important indicator of medical quality. Spectrum Health surgeons perform nearly 900 CABG surgeries annually. In Michigan, we rank first in volume among hospitals who perform open heart surgery (including CABG and cardiac valve surgery), and about one-third of our open heart surgeries are valve surgeries.
