Orthopedic and Neuroscience Council

Who We Are

The Orthopedic and Neuroscience PFAC represents the patients and family members who have experienced orthopedic and neuroscience services. Established in 2010, the council focuses on establishing priorities related to policy, programs and practices that support patients and families around pain management, partnerships between patient, caregiver and provider, and coordination of care.

Council Accomplishments:
  • Provided input to leadership in regards to Call Light Response: Managing Falls; shared their perspective on ways to help communicate and manage the expectation of rounding hourly and how to anticipate the needs of the patient
  • Provided input on the May Stroke Awareness campaign; encouraged a marketing focus on those who are most at risk and their families, who may recognize symptoms before the patient does 
  • Participated in process improvement efforts on the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, assuring the voice of the patient was at the center when new processes were developed
  • Had honest conversations with managers and nursing staff on how to plan for and talk about addressing pain management 
  • Helped improve the process of preparing patients for total joint therapy, from the education class, flow of medical information and naming of pre-op clinic to ensure a smooth transition
  • Worked with leadership on how to best utilize the whiteboards as a communication tool to remind patients about pain medication management, providing a springboard for conversations and education
  • Explored ways to ensure the patient is the center of the Total Joint Class
  • Served as "mystery shoppers" to observe effectiveness of teamwork at various sites throughout Spectrum Health
  • Provided patient and family perspective on facility renovations, expansions, design and furnishing of new buildings
