Kelsey Hospital Sleep Studies sleep lab features a quiet location with off-street parking, private-room amenities and new diagnostic equipment. The location is designed to enhance sleep within two private patient rooms. Each hotel-like room has its own bathroom and a flat-panel television. A shower is available.
During an overnight stay at the sleep lab, technologists monitor the patient's breathing, brain activity and movement through leads attached to the body and video cameras connecting the sleep room to an on-site viewing station.
Digital diagnostic equipment provides images of monitored activities. Board certified physicians, specialists in sleep medicine, then analyze the data and collaborate with the patient's primary care physician to ensure the best possible outcome. Reports help diagnose disorders such as snoring and sleep apnea (disruption in breathing while asleep).
Sleep apnea is very common, as common as adult diabetes, and affects more than 12 million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health. It increases the risk for depression, weight gain, high blood pressure-and if untreated-heart attack, stroke and diabetes.
