Why Spectrum:

I had the opportunity to complete my first year of residency training with Spectrum Health and received a well-rounded experience with excellent clinical preceptors. I am happy to continue on as the Pediatric PGY2 resident at the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. This institution offers a large number of pediatric specialties to children in western Michigan. I am looking forward to working with our knowledgeable and experienced pediatric clinical preceptors. The focus on teaching at Spectrum Health continues to offer me many opportunities both to learn as well as teach. Also, Grand Rapids is a delightful city with much to do.

Name:

Emily Fisher

Hometown:

Farmington Hills, MI

Pharmacy School:

Wayne State University, Detroit, MI

Interest:

Some of my hobbies include figure skating, playing the cello in a string quartet, baking and needlework.  I also enjoy participating in Zumba and yoga classes.  I collect cookbooks, and enjoy experimenting with new recipes.

Why Spectrum Health:

What impressed me most about Spectrum Health was the wide variety of rotations offered and the large number of preceptors.  I also like that residents have the option of staffing in the pediatric or ED satellite.  At Spectrum Health I will be able to have a well-rounded experience while still taking some of the specialized rotations I am interested in.  With five PGY1 residents, I have plenty of people to share my experience with without getting lost in the crowd.

Plans for Next Year:

I am keeping an open mind, but my interests include pediatrics and academia. I would like to stay in Michigan, and I am considering PGY2.

Being from Grand Rapids, I knew that Spectrum Health would provide me with an exceptional learning experience and a wonderful place to start my pharmacy career. Spectrum offers a wide variety of rotation experiences, and there are plenty of opportunities to pursue for further development as a pharmacy resident.

Plans for next year:

Name:

CJ Michaud

Hometown:

Grand Rapids, MI

Pharmacy School:

Ferris State University

Interests:

I love to get out of the city and hike, camp, canoe, and fish. Other hobbies include music, running and playing sports, and leading church youth retreats.

Research Project:

Delirium in the ICU. I am hoping to compare outcomes from two different screening and treatment protocols.

Why Spectrum:

Spectrum Health was a great place to do my PGY-1, and I am excited to be staying here to complete my PGY-2 in critical care. Pharmacy services are highly valued and appreciated throughout the hospital which makes for a great learning environment. Also, the pharmacists, physicians, and other providers enjoy teaching and are invested in the residency programs. In terms of critical care, Spectrum Health is a regional referral center and has a robust ICU population. Spectrum Health also partners with the Ferris State University College of Pharmacy, so there is ample opportunity to teach and develop preceptor skills with P3 and P4 students in the hospital. Finally, I have family and a house in Grand Rapids, and I really enjoy the city, so staying here for another year is the best of both worlds!

Plans for next year:

I will be looking for clinical specialist positions in the Midwest or clinical faculty positions with a college of pharmacy.

Name:

Todd Penn

Hometown:

Phoenix, AZ

Pharmacy School:

Midwestern University- Glendale

Interests:

In my free time I enjoy reading, cycling and I am a bit of a computer geek.

Why Spectrum:

I spent a great deal of time selecting my prospective residency sites (you should see the spreadsheets).  I weighed many factors including location, staffing opportunities, institutional setting, research opportunities, general “feel” for the pharmacy department and practice model.  There were three areas that I felt a residency program must include: it must be at a teaching hospital, include an academic component and have a PGY-2 program.  When I came for my interview at Butterworth Hospital everybody (from the receptionist to the director of pharmacy) went out of their way to make me feel welcome.  The pharmacy residents and staff that I interacted with throughout the day had prepared to talk to me about me.  I was not just another applicant, I was a potential colleague.

The wide range of rotation opportunities as well as the ability to personalize my experience weighed heavily in my decision making.  Spectrum was recommended to me by mentors and professors as a place that I could gain clinical experience and credibility by being an independent learner while being supported by experts in pharmacy.  It truly is the best of both worlds.

Plans for next year:

My plan is to pursue a PGY-2 residency in critical care.

Name:

Jennifer Steward

Hometown:

Edmond, OK

Pharmacy School:

University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy, Oklahoma City, OK

Interests:

In my free time, I enjoy finding new restaurants, playing and listening to all types of music, traveling, and spending time with my little family. I also love watching Oklahoma City Thunder basketball.

Why Spectrum Health:

When researching residency programs, I was looking for a system that would offer many different experiences including my current areas of interest in oncology and pediatrics. Aside from these opportunities, I knew I wanted to be a part of a large health system that values the importance of developing clinical skills that can be appreciated by other health care providers. In addition, Spectrum Health provides teaching development and responsibilities which is an additional interest of mine.

Plans for next year:

I would like to pursue a PGY-2 residency in either oncology or pediatrics.

Name:

Megan Veverka

Hometown:

Brookville, OH

Pharmacy School:

Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana

Interests:

I enjoy reading, playing volleyball, and horseback riding.  I love to travel and experience other places and cultures.

Why Spectrum:

When looking at residency programs, I wanted a site with a diverse array of opportunities.  Spectrum offers multiple pediatric rotations, which is my main area of interest, but also has various rotations in numerous specialties giving residents a broad overview.  Another aspect of Spectrum’s program that appealed to me was the ability to complete a teaching certification program during the course of the year.  Spectrum’s program allows me to learn more about my areas of interest while obtaining a well-rounded experience.

Plans for next year:

I plan on pursuing a PGY2 in pediatrics.
