About Our Service
On occasion, patients may require admission to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital for pulmonary care. The physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical social workers, registered dietitians and respiratory therapists, along with inpatient nursing staff and physical therapists, take part in your recovery. In addition, our music therapist and child life specialists work hard to make the hospital stay enjoyable and to provide activities and distractions when needed.
Cystic Fibrosis Patients
The most common reason for a hospitalization is a CF pulmonary exacerbation. A moderate or severe pulmonary exacerbation is a lung infection that requires intravenous antibiotics for 14 to 21 days. Our entire team is involved in helping the young person resolve his or her infection and get back to his or her regularly scheduled life.
Ventilator Clinic Patients
If your child requires admission to the hospital, he or she will be admitted to our pediatric critical care unit. The hospital staff may consult a member of our team while your child is in the hospital. If Dr. Millard or Dr. McCaslin is not on call, the team member who is on call will update one of the doctors to ensure a smooth transition back to outpatient visits. While your child is in the hospital, he or she will be seen by a medical social worker to address any needs or concerns you may have.
