Meet Spectrum Health's Clinical Ethicists
Ruth Sanborn holds a Doctor of Bioethics degree, as well as an MA in Bioethics and Health Policy from Loyola University Chicago. She also has an MA in Religious Studies from Mount Saint Mary’s University in Los Angeles. Ruth’s philosophy of clinical ethics is rooted in an understanding of the dignity and inherent worth of every human life. Ruth joined Spectrum Health as a Clinical Ethicist in the fall of 2015.
Jeff Byrnes holds an MA in the history of philosophy and earned his PhD in philosophy from the University of Essex, UK. He has broad interests in philosophy and its history, with particular interests in the role of authenticity and autonomy in medical ethics. Jeff joined Spectrum Health as a Clinical Ethicist in the fall of 2016. When he is not serving with Spectrum Health, he is a member of the Philosophy faculty at Grand Valley State University in Allendale where he teaches ethics
Marleen Eijkholt’s earned an LL.B/LL.M degree in Law from Maastricht University (NL). She also obtained her PhD in Bioethics and Medical Jurisprudence from the University of Manchester (UK). Her interests are eclectic, focusing mostly around the Ethical Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) of neurotechnology, reproductive medicine, clinical ethics and clinical research. Marleen is an Assistant Professor at the College of Human Medicine at MSU, and joined Spectrum Health as a Clinical Ethicist in 2017.
