About Our Service
The blood and bone marrow transplantation program at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital is the region’s only pediatric blood and bone marrow transplantation program and has been providing a multidisciplinary approach to transplant care since 1998. Our program facilitates potentially life-saving marrow, peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood transplants. We’re accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), which means that we meet rigorous quality standards for patient care and cell therapy treatments.
The blood and bone marrow transplantation team consists of attending physicians, physician assistants, clinical coordinators, pediatric pharmacists, a program manager/search and intake coordinator, and a medical social worker. Each member of our team is devoted to guiding you and your family through the transplant process and to providing individualized, quality care. According to the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), our outcomes for transplants are consistently among the top tier nationwide.
There are 12 private inpatient rooms that have a High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter and are isolated to help guard against infection.
Diagnoses treated with blood and bone marrow transplantations include, but are not limited to:
• Immune deficiencies
• Metabolic disorders
• Solid tumors, including brain cancer and neuroblastoma
The source of the transplant graft depends on the disease for which the patient is being transplanted and is chosen by the attending physicians. The stem cells or graft may come from bone marrow, peripheral blood or umbilical cord blood and will come from the patient (autologous) or someone else (allogeneic).
Our pediatric BMT program belongs to the following organizations:
• National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP)
• Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR)
• Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium (PBMTC)
• Children’s Oncology Group (COG)
