Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital is such a place, with complete services for blood and bone cancers and blood disorders tailored specifically for childhood needs.


The blood and bone marrow transplantation program at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital is the region’s only pediatric blood and bone marrow transplantation program, with potentially life-saving marrow, peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood transplants. We also offer age-appropriate chemotherapy and radiation services, along with vital immunotherapy and other needed therapies to address your child’s cancer or blood disorder.

Features of Blood and Bone Cancer Services

  • Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant

    This process replaces unhealthy bone marrow/stem cells with healthy cells. A bone marrow transplant is usually done on children with serious or chronic forms of anemia, leukemia and sickle cell disease.

  • Blood Transfusion

    A blood transfusion may be needed for children with serious or chronic forms of anemia, to increase their red blood cells and introduce healthy red blood cells to their bodies.

  • Chemotherapy

    Chemotherapy works to destroy cancer throughout the body. Chemotherapy may be needed before or after surgery for medulloblastoma or neuroblastoma.

  • Immunotherapy

    Special antibodies are used to stimulate the immune system to attack cancer cells. This targeted therapy is especially effective to help your child fight lymphoma and other blood cancers.

  • Radiation Therapy

    Radiation uses high-energy X-rays to kill rapidly multiplying cancer cells. It is especially effective in treating medulloblastoma, and when used after chemotherapy and surgery for neuroblastoma.

  • Retinoid Therapy

    For kids with high-risk neuroblastoma, this treatment uses chemicals related to vitamin A to help transform cancer cells into mature nerve cells. It also helps prevent the cancer from recurring.
