Treatments for Myleodysplastic Syndrome

Your Treatment Begins Here

Myelodysplastic syndromes are rare, so it’s important to find a cancer team with expertise in various types of MDS. Spectrum Health’s blood cancer team is the region’s leader in diagnosing and treating myeloid disorders. Our team of board-certified oncologists develops a personalized treatment plan for each patient, focusing not only on freeing the body of illness but also on maintaining quality of life.

Myelodysplastic syndromes often do not cause early symptoms and are found during a routine blood test. Other times, careful study of blood and bone marrow samples is needed to tell MDS apart from other diseases with similar signs and symptoms.

After a diagnosis, genetic testing may be done to predict how likely the MDS is to develop into acute myeloid leukemia or an otherwise life-threatening type of the disease.

Treatments We Provide

  • Blood and Marrow Transplantation

This process delivers healthy blood or bone marrow (as stem cells) to replace unhealthy bone marrow. Before the transplant, intensive treatment will kill as many cancer cells as possible to set the stage for new bone marrow growth.

  • Cancer Genetics Program

A specialty service that can help you discover if you are genetically predisposed to certain cancers.

  • Chemotherapy

This well-known cancer treatment uses medicines taken intravenously or by mouth to kill cancer cells throughout the body. Chemotherapy may be given before surgery to shrink tumors, or after to fight cancer cells that have potentially spread.
