Important Information About Infection Risk for Heart and Lung Surgery Patients

NOTE: On October 13, 2016, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued a Health Alert Notice regarding heater-cooler devices and the risk of infection for open-heart surgery heart patients. Below is the information Spectrum Health initially posted in April 2016.

April 2016

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) each have recently issued safety advisories regarding the potential risk of infection associated with heater-cooler devices used in certain heart and lung surgeries. Health care providers across the U.S. have been alerted to the potential link between a type of bacteria that can grow in these devices and infections in patients.

While the risk of getting this infection is very low—less than one percent—Spectrum Health is informing patients of these safety advisories and the possible risk of infection linked to these devices. We are informing patients who had certain heart or lung surgeries at Spectrum Health between January 1, 2012 and November 10, 2015.
