As a cancer treatment, surgery is done to remove cancerous tissue, diagnose the type of cancer or determine the extent to which cancer has spread. Surgery can be a very effective cure for cancer, especially if the cancer has not spread. Most patients will have some type of surgery in their treatment plan.
Surgery can also be done to:
- Reduce the size of a tumor
- Correct a problem that is causing discomfort
- Surgically place a catheter or port for chemotherapy
- Reconstruct a part of the body that has been altered or removed by cancer treatment.
Spectrum Health is a regional referral center providing cancer patients with many types of surgery, including general surgery, da Vinci® Surgical System (robot-assisted technology), plastic surgery and surgical critical care.
