Co-Chair, Clinical Neurosciences
Brien Smith, MD, FAAN, serves as co-chair of the department of clinical neurosciences and chief, division of neurology, for Spectrum Health Medical Group, a multispecialty group practice with more than 600 providers. Spectrum Health Medical Group is a part of Spectrum Health, a not-for-profit, integrated system in West Michigan. Dr. Smith is nationally recognized for his extensive research in epilepsy. His main interests include evaluation and treatment of patients with refractory epilepsy.
Areas of Responsibility
Dr. Smith serves as co-chair of the department of clinical neurosciences and chief of neurology for Spectrum Health Medical Group. He is a leading national expert in the management and care of epilepsy. His main interests include evaluation and treatment of patients with refractory epilepsy. Dr. Smith co-authored the book “Epilepsy Surgery: Case Studies and Commentaries,” and has specific research interests in magneto encephalography, epilepsy in the elderly, and post-traumatic epilepsy.
Dr. Smith comes to Spectrum Health Medical Group from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit where he served as senior staff neurologist and medical director of the comprehensive epilepsy program.
Dr. Smith earned his medical degree at Wayne State University in Detroit and went on to complete post graduate training in neurology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Dr. Smith completed his fellowship in EEG/Epilepsy at Indiana University Health University Hospital in Indianapolis.
Dr. Smith is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Clinical/Neurophysiology and in Neurology. He serves on the Epilepsy Foundation's American Board of Directors and as Chair of the Legal and Government Affairs Committee. He is a member of the Epilepsy Foundation of America Professional Advisory Board and serves as Chair of the Advocacy Committee.
