Experienced Bowel Disorder Care
Spectrum Health offers experienced, coordinated care from physicians who are specially trained in disorders of the small intestine, including gastrointestinal cancer.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Other Bowel Disorders
Our gastroenterologists and colorectal surgeons diagnose and treat a range of bowel disorders, including:
Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy
The diagnostic workup may include a small bowel capsule endoscopy, which can be performed at the Spectrum Health Endoscopy Center. During this procedure, a capsule about the size of a large pill is swallowed. This self-contained endoscope has its own camera, light source and transmitter with an eight-hour lifespan. The capsule transmits images of the esophagus, stomach and small bowel to a receiver. Eventually, the capsule passes through the colon and is eliminated.
Approximately 55,000 images are available to the physician for review, making it useful for determining causes of recurrent or persistent abdominal pain, diarrhea and anemia.
Bowel Disorder Treatment Options
Treatment options may include diet and nutrition, medications or surgery. Our physicians and nutritionists can recommend diets to help patients avoid foods that make symptoms worse as well as ensure that they are getting adequate nutrition.
When surgery is needed, Spectrum Health surgeons are skilled in the latest procedures, including strictureplasty, colectomy, fistula repair and abscess draining. In 2011, Spectrum Health performed nearly 450 IBD inpatient and outpatient procedures, giving us a high volume of procedures and greater experience in treating inflammatory bowel disorders than any other group in West Michigan.
