Dr. Byrnes is responsible for leading the development and implementation of quality and safety programs throughout Spectrum Health System.
Employment History
Dr. Byrnes has more than 25 years of health care experience. Previously, he served as senior vice president of clinical effectiveness at Sharp HealthCare in San Diego, CA. He also served in administrative positions at Catholic Healthcare West, which operates 48 hospitals in Arizona, California and Nevada, Saint Francis Health Systems in Tulsa, and Lovelace Health Systems in Albuquerque. Dr. Byrnes co-founded Lovelace Healthcare Innovations, a research, development and training affiliate of Lovelace Health Systems. During his seven-year tenure with the Lovelace system, he also led the development and implementation of the award-winning Episodes of Care disease management program and was honored for his work in clinical quality improvement and outcome measurement.
Educational Background
Dr. Byrnes earned a combined six-year bachelor's and medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. He completed his residency of anesthesioloigy at the University of Texas in Houston including Hermann Hospital, Texas Children's Hospital, Texas Heart Institute and MD Anderson. He is board certified in anesthesiology.

Dr. Byrnes is widely published, has contributed to several books, and served as editor for many industry journals and publications. He is a member of the American College of Physician Executives, the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Healthcare Financial Management Association, among others. |
