LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the USGBC's leading rating system for designing and constructing the world's greenest, most energy-efficient and high-performing buildings. Only 25 hospitals in the United States hold LEED Gold certification, the second highest designation a hospital or building can attain. Helen DeVos Children's Hospital is the only hospital in the state to be awarded Gold certification and one of only two dedicated children's hospitals in the nation to achieve this designation.

Helen DeVos Children's Hospital was recognized for its safety-behavior training for all employees and physicians, consistent coding and classification of serious safety events, new safety metrics, transparency of data and safety events and safety behavior residency curriculum.


Engineering News-Record Best of the Best Award

Helen DeVos Children's Hospital was recognized by Engineering News-Record with its 2011 Best of the Best Project Award in the health care category. The hospital was selected from more than 700 entries for being an outstanding achievement in construction within the U.S. for 2011. Independent industry judges chose winners in 18 categories based on design and construction excellence, teamwork, safety and contribution to the community. The children's hospital was selected for its sustainable design, which maximizes daylight and reduces energy consumption, and, most importantly, its healing environment.

Impact Award in Public Relations & Communications

Helen DeVos Children's Hospital was selected as the recipient of 2012 Impact Award in Public Relations & Communications by the Children's Hospital Association, formerly the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions. The award recognizes excellence in public relations and communications for children's hospitals and child health programs. The public relations campaign shared "24 Ways Kids Are Different" and highlighted how their health care needs are different. The ways kids are different was the centerpiece of an integrated blend of traditional and social media, proactive news media, media partnerships, physician communications and special events.

Flu Vaccination Challenge Gold Level Award

The Joint Commission Resources, the official publisher of The Joint Commission and Joint Commission International, and the Flu Vaccination Challenge team recently recognized Spectrum Health for our commitment to patient and employee safety, demonstrated by our influenza fvaccination rates. In the 2010-2011 season, Spectrum Health achieved "gold level" status in the Flu Vaccination Challenge for having at least a 95 percent flu immunization rate, a level that only 17 percent of organizations who report their data have reached.


Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®: National Benchmarks

Practice Greenhealth System for Change Award

The System for Change Award recognizes health systems that are working cohesively to set system goals, track data, benchmark and share successes in environmental performance. Since the award's program began in 2008, only 17 health care systems in the U.S. have received this award. This is a great accomplishment and indicates a shift towards creating a sustainability culture.

Top 10 Health System

Spectrum Health was named a top 10 health system in an annual study analyzing national health care quality and safety performance of 285 health systems. This was the second year in a row that Spectrum Health received this honor. In addition, it was the only health system in Michigan to be named in the top 10 by the Thomson Reuters 10 Top Health Systems study.

Modern Healthcare's 2011 Patient Safety Spirit Award

In late 2011, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital was recognized as part of Modern Healthcare's 19th annual Spirit of Excellence awards. The Spirit of Excellence awards acknowledge programs that support organizational excellence, patient and employee satisfaction, customer service, commitment and community participation. Helen DeVos Children's Hospital received the Patient Safety Spirit Award, which focuses on strategies and processes that improve the safety of care for patients. The children's hospital was recognized for developing safety behavior training and a safety leadership infrastructure, encouraging transparency of safety events and measuring performance against strict quality and safety metrics. National Patient Safety Foundation's 2011 Chairman's Medal The National Patient Safety Foundation awarded the 2011 Chairman's Medal to Bob Connors, MD, president, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, and practicing pediatric surgeon. The award was presented at the Patient Safety Congress in Washington, D.C., and recognizes emerging leadership in the patient safety field. Recipients must demonstrate an ability to inspire and lead the change necessary to implement patient safety improvements. Recipients must also encourage a culture of respect, openness, learning and teamwork.

This achievement recognizes the hospital's dedication to providing optimal care for injured infants, children and adolescents by physicians, nurses, child life specialists and rehabilitation specialists. The verification program promotes the development of trauma centers that provide the necessary hospital resources to care for injured patients and a range of services to address their needs.

The Making Medicine Mercury-Free Award recognizes organizations that have virtually eliminated mercury from their facilities and have made a commitment to continue to be mercury free.


Fully Accredited Chest Pain Center

Butterworth Hospital received full accreditation as a chest pain center with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. This accreditation is valid for three years.


Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®: National Benchmarks

Spectrum Health was named one of Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks for the seventh time since 1997. This recognition includes Blodgett and Butterworth hospitals. The Thomson Reuters study evaluates performance in 10 areas: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, expenses, profitability, patient satisfaction, adherence to clinical standards of care, and post-discharge mortality and readmission rates for heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia.


Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence

Spectrum Health Comprehensive Breast Care Program is the only one in West Michigan with a three-year accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). Accreditation by the NAPBC is given to programs that voluntarily commit to providing the highest level of quality breast care, and to undergoing a rigorous evaluation process and performance review.

The Most Wired Survey is conducted annually by Hospitals & Health Networks, the journal of the American Hospital Association, which uses the results to name the 100 Most Wired hospitals and health systems. It focuses on how the nation's hospitals use the information technologies for quality, customer service, public health and safety, business processes and workforce issues. Spectrum Health was honored in two categories: Most Wired and Most Wireless. This is the first time Spectrum Health has won these awards.

Spectrum Health's Center for Joint Replacement earned the Gold Seal of Approval for health care quality from the Joint Commission. Butterworth Hospital and Blodgett Hospital were both awarded with Disease-Specific Care Certification in both hip and knee replacement. SH is the only health system in West Michigan to earn this distinction. To receive certification, a disease management program undergoes an extensive, unannounced, on-site evaluation by a team of reviewers from The Joint Commission.
